32K gallons of saltwater spilled, recovered near Tioga

TIOGA, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Oil and Gas Division says more than 32,000 gallons of what is known as produced water spilled and was cleaned up at an oil field site in Mountrail County.

Produced water is a mixture of saltwater and oil that can contain drilling chemicals.

Hess Bakken Investments II LLC reported the spill at a tank battery about 7 miles north of Tioga on Tuesday. The company estimates that 770 barrels spilled, was contained and recovered on site. A barrel contains 42 gallons.

The company says an equipment malfunction caused tanks to overflow.

This story has been corrected to show that the liquid that spilled was produced water, not saltwater.
