ND sheriff accused of misusing department credit card

WILLISTON, N.D. — The McKenzie County sheriff is facing a criminal charge after authorities accused him of misusing his department’s credit card.

The Williston Herald reports that Sheriff Gary Schwartzenberger is accused in an affidavit of racking up about $980 in personal charges. They include airfare for his wife to attend a law enforcement conference in Las Vegas, an upgrade fee for a rental convertible, a golf trip and a meal.

The affidavit says Schwartzenberger footed the bill months later after numerous attempts by the auditor’s office to seek repayment.

Schwarzenberger is charged with misapplication of entrusted property, a misdemeanor. A Dec. 2 preliminary hearing is scheduled.

Schwarzenberger released a statement Thursday saying: “When the sheriff does his job, he doesn’t always make friends and the truth will always prevail.”
