Train strikes semi in Forest River, N.D.

A crash between a train and a semi in Forest River, N.D., Friday morning resulted in no injuries and minor damage.

It was about 9:40 a.m. when Christopher Romann, 32, of Moorhead was waiting for a train to pass on Brennen Street in Forest River, according to a North Dakota Highway Patrol news release.

Once the train cars had passed, Romann proceeded across the tracks, but he had failed to make sure the tracks were clear, according to the release. A Northern Plains Railroad train, operated by Justin Ferguson, 35, of Park River, N.D., was approaching.

Ferguson told officers he had activated the train’s horn and bell and applied the emergency brakes, but the train was unable to stop before it hit Romann’s semitrailer.

The train hit the trailer on the passenger side, according to the release. Both the semitrailer and the train sustained minor damage.

Romann was charged by officers with failure to yield, according to the release.

Walsh County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the scene.
