Baytown, TX lightning strike causes oil tank explosion

Shane Thielges | Shale Plays Media

An oil tank in Baytown, Texas has exploded after being struck by lightning, Click2Houston.com reports.

The incident occurred at Holloman Oil Corp. shortly after 1:00 P.M. Two tanks holding a combined 1,400 barrels of crude oil were destroyed as well as three tanks of wastewater. No injuries have been reported.

Clouds of black smoke were visible for miles, but Baytown Fire Marshall Bernard Olive said the oil burned so quickly that the flames died down in about ten minutes. Emergency responders used fire extinguishers on what small fires remained to avoid potential chemical contamination from water runoff.
