Northern Industrial Training offers comprehensive Bakken training opportunities

The North Dakota oil field work force is benefiting from three generations of Alaskan oil field experience. Northern Industrial Training of Palmer, Alaska is training oil field workers in Dickinson, North Dakota. The company specializes in truck driver training, safety training, welding and construction skills.

The birth and growth of NIT in the last year fits a niche for oil field employment. It trains workers to qualify for the skilled job openings in the Bakken oil patch – the kind of jobs that richly reward trained and skilled employees.

The training facilities in western Dickinson include classrooms as well as a large field for learning to operate semi-truck tractor trailer combinations. The school works with regional companies to provide the courses they need to attract qualified drivers and other workers. One of the truck driving training courses is an intense two-week course designed to help reduce the down time of lost income some workers face when they enroll in work force training.

An additional bonus attracting students to NIT is the training provided by instructor Diego Sanchez. After moving to the United States from Columbia, years ago, Sanchez improved both his classroom instructor skills and his bilingual talents. He now teaches health and safety classes at the Dickinson facility for both English-speaking students and for those who struggle with English as a second language.

Safety is a number one element in not only the health and safety classes, but in the entire curriculum offered by NIT. Alaska native, company president and Chief Operating Officer Joey Crum is reaching out to North Dakota lawmakers and others to help improve the safety of the Bakken work environment. His passion for excellence and highly-skilled workers spreads through the organization. He said, “We believe that when an individual with drive and desire is presented an opportunity in a professional environment – coupled with the highest quality training – they can become a skilled and valuable member of the workforce.”
