Oil patch bypasses to start with ceremonies

 By Lauren Donovan

Ceremonial groundbreaking for two road projects designed to greatly increase safety and comfort in the oil patch will be held Tuesday.

Local and state officials will gather at 10 a.m. Tuesday to herald the start of the Alexander bypass, at a location one mile west of U.S. Highway 85 on First Avenue.

Later, at 12:15 p.m., a second event will be held to commemorate construction startup of the permanent Williston bypass. The ceremony will be held from the intersection of U.S. Highway 2/85 one mile west on County Road 4 to Bennett Loop.

Both projects are intended to divert heavy oil truck traffic safely around, rather than through the communities.

The state Department of Transportation also is working on bypasses in Dickinson, New Town, Watford City and Killdeer.
