Environmentalists in Anchorage rally against Arctic drilling

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Environmentalists rallied Monday against oil drilling in the Arctic, gathering at an Anchorage park near a climate change conference President Barack Obama was scheduled to attend later in the day.

A few hundred people attended the two-hour rally, waving signs with such messages as “There is no plan B” and “We are making our earth sick.”

The event was hosted by various environmental groups and included live music and speakers.

Speakers warned about the environmental risks involved in Royal Dutch Shell’s recently approved Arctic drilling plans at a time when climate change is already wreaking environmental chaos, including escalating wildfires, coastal erosion, receding sea ice and other impacts blamed on global warming.

Speakers said now is the time pursue solutions, such as canceling Shell’s Arctic drilling program.
