Man sentenced for dumping contaminated fuel in 2013

PORT ALLEN, La. — A Zachary man must pay a $5,000 fine after being sentenced for illegally dumping gasoline and diesel behind a gas station in Port Allen.

The Advocate reports state Judge J. Robin Free also sentenced 58-year-old Leon Wallace, of Zachary, to two years’ probation and ordered him to pay the state Department of Environmental Quality $970 for the cost of the investigation.

Wallace pleaded guilty on Feb. 4.

The sentence stems from an incident on Jan. 25, 2013, when Wallace was loading fuel into his truck at a local refinery and mistakenly mixed several hundred gallons of diesel with several thousand gallons of gasoline.

In trying to hide the mistake, DEQ says Wallace drove to the gas station and dumped some of the mixture at the back of the property.
