Two women from the Texas energy industry pay no mind to men’s club rhetoric

Historically, there has been a huge deficiency of women in top corporate positions in the United States. But in Houston, two of the highest-ranking female executives from the booming energy industry are inevitable cracks within the glass ceiling.

In a recent Fortune Magazine list, Meg Gentle, the senior vice president of marketing for Cheniere Energy Inc., ranked fourth in the top 25 highest-paid female executives at publicly traded companies. At 39 years of age, Gentle has climbed far in the world of business. Prior to joining Cheniere Energy, Gentle spent eight years in energy market development, economic evaluation and long-range planning. She earned her B.A in Economics and International Affairs from James Madison University in 1996 and a M.B.A. from Rice University in 2004.

According to the Houston Business Journal, in 2013, her total compensation for her work at Cheniere Energy totaled $21.7 million. Data retrieved from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revealed that most of Gentle’s compensation came from stock awards, totaling nearly $19 million in 2013.

Kimberly Dang claimed the No. 20 spot on the Fortune list. Dang is the vice president and CFO of Houston-based Kinder Morgan Inc. and other Kinder Morgan-related companies. Now 44, Dang earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and accounting from Texas A&M and received her Master’s in Business Administration from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University Her compensation last year tallied in at $10.4 million, $9 million of which came from stock awards according to an SEC filing.

The Houston Buisness Journal pointed out that the city of Houston has seen progress in elevating women to higher paying positions within its workforce. The percentage of women on corporate boards increased from 8.2 percent in 2012 to 11.9 percent in 2013.
